I have been using the BackWPup WordPress plugin to backup my WordPress website.  I had just been backing up to the web server itself but was curious if there to backup to a different source.  I did some research and found a method to backup via FTP and to DropBox.  My steps are below.

FTP (https://backwpup.com/docs/how-to-save-backups-to-your-ftp-server/)

  • Create folder to store backup
    • If Media Temple, create in “data” folder
  • Job Destination – Backup to FTP
  • To: FTP tab
    • FTP server – s000000.gridserver.com (if Media Temple)
    • Username – enter data
    • Password – enter data
    • Folder to store files in – data/backwpup/
    • File Deletion – 30
    • Timeout for FTP connection – 90 seconds
    • Check – User explicit SSL-FTP connection
    • Check – use FTP passive mode
    • Save changes
  • Test backup

DropBox (https://backwpup.com/docs/backup-wordpress-to-dropbox/)

  • Create folder to store backup
  • Job Destination – Backup to DropBox
  • To: Dropbox tab
    • Click “Get Dropbox App auth code” for limited access to Dropbox Apps folder
    • Click Allow
    • Copy code and paste in BackWPup plugin
    • Save changes
    • Destination Folder – /foldername/
    • File Deletion – 2 (see appropriate)
    • Save Changes
  • Test backup
